AI Use Cases in Finance

Forty use cases, each scored six ways. A demo is not a use case, so we rank the ones that pay back and show where to start.

โœ“  40 use cases: 22 in the finance function, 18 in financial institutions

โœ“  Six scores for every one, so the ranking is explicit

โœ“  Three waves that sequence the winners

โœ“  Controls, model risk and a no-fly list

95%

of enterprise generative AI pilots show no measurable P&L impact (MIT NANDA, The GenAI Divide, August 2025). Scoring is how you avoid being one of them.

What is inside

Every chapter ends with a Monday morning box. The full scoring sheet and templates are in Appendix A.

The method

Six scores for every use case

Each use case is scored the same six ways, and the machine doing the work (generative, analytical, predictive or agentic) is named first.

22 use cases

The finance function

Eight functions, scored on the four numbers that drive the sequence. The best place to start, because the data is structured and the baseline is already in the ledger.

18 use cases

Financial institutions

Seven functions, higher value and higher risk. Most are second or third wave, and the guide shows what each needs before it starts.

Sequencing

Three waves

Twelve first-wave use cases that pay back in under six months, then the ones that need more data or more control.

Governance

The stack and the control layer

The technology stack, the controls around it, model risk, and the no-fly list for what AI should not do in finance.

Worked in full

Corbin's finance function

The frozen case company, with its finance function worked end to end, and a view of who on the team does what.

The argument

A demo is not a use case.

A use case has data it can run on, an owner, a control around it and a payback you can measure. Most finance AI never gets that far. This guide scores forty of them so a finance leader can choose, sequence and defend the first twelve.

Who it is for

CFOs and finance leaders choosing where to start with AI.
FP&A and controllership teams who need a ranked list, not a vendor demo.
Operating partners sizing finance-function value in a portfolio company.
Finance professionals building skills for the AI-enabled function.
