In brief

What is COPPE Level 1?

COPPE Level 1 is the first certification in the VCII Certified Operating Partner in Private Equity programme. It teaches how value is created inside a private equity portfolio company, through revenue growth, margin expansion, acquisitions, debt paydown and multiple movement, and how an operator steers that work with valuation bridges, KPI scorecards and thirteen week cash.

It is self paced, costs USD 199 as one payment, needs no prior private equity experience, and complements credentials such as the CFA or CPA rather than repeating them.

Every lesson, five ways

  1. Written lesson
  2. Audio of the lesson
  3. Audiocast
  4. Visual Companion
  5. VideoCast

Read it, listen to it or watch it. All available from day one, not drip released.

The idea Level 1 turns on

Levers land at different speeds. The exit prices all of them.

Commercial work can pay back inside a quarter. Capability takes a year to show. Leverage magnifies both, and a buyer at exit will price only what the business can prove. An operator who knows the levers but not their timing builds a plan that reads well and lands late.

What most people learn

A list of value creation levers

Revenue, margin, acquisitions, debt, multiple. Correct, and almost useless as a plan, because it says nothing about order, speed or what the buyer will pay for.

What COPPE Level 1 teaches

A plan designed back from the exit

Build the exit narrative early and align every initiative to earnings, working capital and enterprise value, so the plan can be started on Monday and defended at exit.

What you will be able to do

Four capabilities an operating partner is hired for

Each one is taught in the language the investment committee uses, so your work is read the way you meant it.

01

Pull the right lever

Revenue growth, margin expansion, acquisitions, debt paydown and multiple movement, and how each behaves differently under leverage.

02

Steer with operator grade analysis

Valuation bridges, KPI scorecards and thirteen week cash, used to steer the business rather than to report on it.

03

Design the exit first

Build the exit narrative early and align every initiative to earnings, working capital and enterprise value.

04

Activate digital and AI

Pragmatic analytics and automation that compound value rather than consume budget.

The curriculum

Try it: the value creation bridge

Where did the gain actually come from?

Every exit splits the equity gain into three columns: EBITDA growth, multiple change and debt paydown. Move the three levers and watch the bridge rebuild. It is the same bridge the Sandbox draws at exit.

The company at entry

EBITDA20.0
Entry multiple9.0x
Enterprise value180.0
Net debt108.0
Earnings growth, valued at the entry multiple
What the buyer pays per unit of exit EBITDA
Net debt falls by this amount before exit

Equity value bridge, entry to exit

Illustrative figures in millions of US dollars, not a real company. EBITDA growth is valued at the entry multiple and the multiple change at exit EBITDA, so the three columns always add up to the exit equity.

Included with enrolment

The VCII Value Creation Sandbox

Enrolment includes the VCII Value Creation Sandbox, a gamified simulator. You choose one of five deals, then run the mandate across twelve quarters with a budget that never stretches far enough, sequencing five operating levers that each land at a different speed.

At exit a buyer prices what you built, and the value bridge splits the gain into EBITDA growth, multiple change and debt paydown. Reading teaches the vocabulary. Running a plan teaches the trade.

Who it is for

Built for people who will sit on the operating side

No prerequisites. You need to want to understand how a portfolio company is actually improved, not only how it is valued.

Built for

  • Aspiring operating partners preparing for their first portfolio seat
  • Deal team professionals who want to understand the operating side of the plan they underwrite
  • Executives in PE backed companies who report to a board and an investment committee
  • Consultants and advisers who work on value creation plans
  • Holders of a CFA, CPA or MBA who want the operating discipline those credentials do not cover

Not the right purchase if

  • You want live classes, a cohort or one-to-one tuition. The course is self paced and asynchronous.
  • You already run value creation plans and need the quantitative apparatus with a supervised examination. Start with Level 2.
  • Your seat is the analysis rather than the operation. CVCA Level 1 is the better fit.
  • You want a quick checklist of levers. This course teaches the timing and trade offs behind them.
COPPE or CVCA

Which seat are you training for?

Both are Level 1 certifications and share the same simulator. They train different seats at the same table. Choose the one that matches the job you do, or the job you want next.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a private equity background?

No. There are no prerequisites. The course starts with the industry and its players and builds from there. A pre-assessment shows you where you stand before Lesson 1.

How long does COPPE Level 1 take?

It is self paced and takes two to seventeen weeks, depending on your pace. Access runs for twelve months and everything is available from day one.

Are there live sessions or a cohort?

No. The course is asynchronous throughout. You start when you enrol and work through it in your own time.

How is COPPE different from the CFA?

The CFA is about investment analysis. COPPE is about building value inside the companies once they are owned. The two are complementary.

Should I take Level 1 or Level 2 first?

Either order works. Level 1 gives the principles and the operator’s vocabulary; Level 2 applies the quantitative apparatus to one company under a supervised examination. Both are prerequisites for Level 3.

What is the Value Creation Sandbox?

A gamified simulator included with enrolment. You choose one of five deals and run it across twelve quarters, sequencing five operating levers. At exit a buyer prices what you built and the value bridge splits the gain into EBITDA growth, multiple change and debt paydown.

How does the refund work?

Full refund within seven days of purchase while the course is unused. Starting any assessment, including the pre-assessment, ends the refund window.
